20 Under 40 Honor

One of the most sought after honors in Spokane is to be part of the 20 under 40 cohort. Matt Sonderen, 39 years old, made the cut for this well deserved recognition at the close of 2019.

“Each year Inland Business Catalyst asks our readership to submit nominations for 20 Under 40, a celebration of rising stars in our region who embody an entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and excellence in their chosen industry, and demonstrate a commitment to giving back to the community, as well.  This year the winners were selected from an outstanding body of nominees through a review of vetted area professionals and 20 Under 40 Hall of Famers.”

Matt Sonderen’s current role as co-owner at Sonderen Packaging is to keep the company moving forward with the vision of “Fierce Independence”. With over 20 years of work experience behind him, he has a history of being a “jack of all trades” by filling in necessary gaps within the company. From accounting to customer service, die cutting to quality director, Matt’s vast experiences have set the foundation to be a well-rounded and thoughtful leader for Sonderen Packaging. He has always been willing to take on any role necessary for the company to succeed. He is the ultimate teammate and strives to be a thoughtful risk taker when planning for the future of Sonderen.

The 20 under 40 awards ceremony was held in the Hanger Event Center at the Felts Field airport amongst friends, family, coworkers and 200 other people in attendance to support their respective rock star. In Matt’s acceptance speech, he says, “I’m certain I’m preaching to the choir here, but I’d encourage anyone that has not yet done so to get involved.  Join an organization like Rotary, or provide your expertise to an organization like the Northeast Community Center.  Your experience living here in this region becomes just that much more fulfilling.” Matt is on the board of the Northeast Community Center. This organization is located in the same neighborhood as Sonderen Packaging. Being a member of this board is in alignment with our philanthropic mission, to “take care of our own”; our neighbors, who oftentimes are our co-workers.  The Northeast Community Center Association (NECCA) is a non-profit neighborhood organization that strives to improve the quality of life for residents of northeast Spokane, with emphasis on social, health, economic, education and recreational needs.

Matt is also heavily involved in Rotary 21 and serves on several committees. Rotary is an organization that focuses on philanthropic needs of the community and world. Matt is also the Cubmaster for Pack 171 and is passionate about the values and experiences that scouting embodies.

Matt balances his time and duties at work with time with his family. Oftentimes you can find Matt on the side of a mountain – either snow skiing or riding bikes with his three athletic and energetic boys. He loves to take his beautiful wife Shelli on getaways so they can spend quality time together. One of his favorite places to be is at the family cabin at Priest Lake.
