Primary Purpose of Position:
Oversees the Printing and Sheeting departments; Sheeter Operators, Pressman, Feeders and Assistants to ensure clear instructions on the tasks to be performed. This position is responsible for Scheduling the Department, Decision Making, Health & Safety, Continuous Improvement, Parts, Materials & Maintenance,
Training and Knowledge, Communication, Work Schedule & Attendance, Customer Interactions, Quality, Management Team Participation, Additional Duties, and General Expectations as outlined below. This position is also responsible for the Product Safety Program and ensuring department compliance and training. In your absence, you must have a person identified and designated to cover these duties.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

SCHEDULING: Determine daily scheduling of machine centers and direct reports by utilizing the ERP system. Know and communicate the machines and job priorities to direct reports. Attend scheduling meetings and strategize with other departments to maximize throughput.

DECISION MAKING: Make critical decisions in the absence of the plant manager and general manager, including whether or not to run a job, if the job is in question. Adapt to schedule changes in other departments and make the call to move jobs from one press or shift to another. This person also utilizes their expertise and acts as a consultant for new jobs and quotations by providing information on how to most effectively and efficiently run the job. Must also attend ‘new job review’ meetings.

SAFETY: Acts as the safety supervisor for the emergency action plans including fire drills. Responsible for visitors and general plant safety. Responsible for a clean and organized department, mitigating any safety hazards. Must be aware of all reported accidents and close calls to ensure proper medical processes are followed. Assures and maintains safe and healthful working conditions, while enforcing safety rules and regulations. It is the essential function of the job that the individual will not be a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves, others, or the property. Direct threat is defined as a significant risk of substantial harm that cannot be eliminated or reduced to and acceptable level by reasonable accommodation.

CONTUNUOUS IMPROVEMENT (C.I.): Responsible for continuous improvement implementation in Printing and Sheeting departments. Work closely with the C.I. facilitator to schedule and maintain C.I. initiatives.

PARTS, MATERIALS & MAINTENANCE: Research and order parts, materials, and tooling. Work closely with INX ink to ensure consistent supply of ink to the pressroom. Advise management on department machinery needs. Work directly with maintenance department to ensure machines are functioning properly. Help advance and follow TPM (total preventive maintenance) program, ensuring that the pressroom equipment is maintained to an elevated standard.

TRAINING AND KNOWLEDGE: Train Pressmen on machine usage to the best of your knowledge. Schedule internal or external training as needed and approved by plant manager. Mentor direct reports to foster leadership skills and growth in knowledge. Troubleshoot problems that arise on machines. Help maximize output and delivery of quality product. Be forward thinking and actively inquire, research, and explore new technologies.

COMMUNICATION: Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and review job ticket for special instructions and information. Must communicate clearly and effectively with all operators through shift transitions. Must have computer literacy in order to email and share files electronically with other departments, as well as other computer related functions. Responsible for giving detailed information on previous night operations if needed.

WORK SCHEDULE & ATTENDANCE:
The customary work schedule of the Printing/Sheeting Department Manager is 5-8’s to maximize availability and oversight while machines are running in their department. Working hours may vary as specified by management, and flexibility is imperative. Incumbent must be able to work any hours necessary to perform the duties of the job. Regular and predictable attendance is required between the assigned start and end times of work.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Performs individual assignments as management requires. May be required to travel for training or equipment evaluation as needed. Responsible for establishing and maintaining goals associated with the Quarterly Metric Payout (QMP) program. Must conduct and stay up to date on annual performance reviews of direct reports. Must be able to lead and assist with press-checks and/or conference calls with customers, conducting oneself in a professional manner at all times. Must review applications, interview, hire and fire direct reports.

QUALITY: Provide products and services that meet or exceed the requirement of customers; assess, anticipate, and fulfill stated and implied specifications. Assist the Quality Department as needed, with Supplier Corrective Action Report (SCAR) and Corrective Action & Preventative Action (CAPA) processes by conducting the root cause investigation. Also determine and implement the corrective action. Input findings into the IMS Xpress quality process tracking system.

MANAGEMENT TEAM: Maintain and foster respectful working relationships with the other members of the management team. Actively participate in monthly management meetings, and other management team activities to build comradery and trust.

Position Specifications:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Education:

Broad training in a related professional field usually acquired through education or an equivalent combination knowledge, skills, education or work-related experience.

Job related experience: ten (10) years in large format, sheet fed, printing press operations.

Job related experience: five (5) years in production management.

Working knowledge of the following areas:

  • Ability to troubleshoot printing department machinery.
  • Ability to lead teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and understand maintenance manuals and schedules.
